Sony denies cutting PlayStation 5 production targets

Just as Sony is preparing to officially announce the pricing of the upcoming PlayStation 5 console, Bloomberg reported that there might be potential trouble behind the scenes. According to its story Sony slashed its production forecast from 15 million units to 11 million.

Poor yields of the custom SoC that powers the console were quoted as a reason, but Sony stepped in to deny the reports.

While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false. We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production.”

Sony reportedly cuts PlayStation 5 production targets by a quarter

It’s worth mentioning that early targets reported by Bloomberg were as low as 5-6 million, so it’s clear that a lot of guesswork is involved.

Hopefully Sony will be able to make enough PS5 consoles to meet the inevitable increase in demand during the holiday season. Meanwhile, you should check back tomorrow for the prices of the PlayStation 5 and the Digital Edition of the console (which is the same, just without the Blu-ray drive).

Rival Microsoft is set to release the $300/€300 Xbox Series S and $500/€300 Series X on November 10 (and fans will be able to pre-order starting on September 22). Meanwhile Nintendo is teasing a 4K version of the Switch for next year.
