Sharp unveils four new smartphones, two of which with 5G

Sharp unveiled four new smartphones for the Japanese market, all of them based on Snapdragon chipsets – two models stick with LTE while the other two support 5G connectivity.

The Sharp zero5G basic name is misleading as this one is actually the top model. The 6.4” OLED display has 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate. It supports HDR and has 1080p+ resolution, there’s a fingerprint reader embedded below.

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. There will also be an 8/128GB option when the phone launches in the coming months. The phone is running Android 10.

On the back, we start with the 48MP main camera (f/1.8). It is joined by a 13.1MP ultra wide cam (125°) and an 8MP tele camera with 3x magnification (79 mm). The selfie camera has a 16.3MP sensor.

Like its three siblings, the zero5G basic is IP68/IPX5 dust and water resistant. Its 4,050 mAh battery is on the smaller side, there’s no mention of charging speed.

Next up is the Sharp Sense4, which also forms the basis for the remaining two models. This one is practically tiny by today’s standards with a 5.8” display (1080p+, IGZO panel). And notice the fingerprint reader below the display, that’s a design element we haven’t seen in ages. If you put your finger on it and hold for a few seconds, it will activate the wireless payment system.

The Sense4 is powered by a Snapdragon 720G chipset, which offers more than double the performance of the previous model, says Sharp (the Sense3 is based on the S630 chip). The new model comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage.

The back features a 12MP main cam (f/2.0), 12MP ultrawide (121°) and an 8MP telephoto lens with 2x magnification (53 mm). On the front, an 8MP selfie cam lives in a notch.

The Sharp Sense4 is equipped with a 4,570 mAh battery (make a note of this number). The phone will be available before the end of the year in Light Copper, Silver and Black.

The Sharp Sense4 Plus is anything but tiny – it moves up to a 6.7” display. It’s not an IGZO panel but it does feature 90 Hz refresh rate and 120Hz touch sampling rate. The fingerprint reader has moved on the back, a more sensible layout.

The chipset is the same, S720G, but on the Plus model it has double the RAM and storage – 8GB and 128GB, respectively. However, the battery capacity drops to 4,120mAh, despite the larger chassis.

The camera is a mixed bag. The main shooter gets a larger 48MP sensor behind a brighter f/1.8 lens. However, the ultrawide cam drops the resolution to 5MP and the field of view to 115°. Which is still better than the zoom cam, which is gone completely, replaced by two 2MP modules (macro and depth). The selfie cam also gets a 2MP depth sensor buddy.

The Sharp Sense5G is essentially a 5G version of the Sense4. It changes the chipset, obviously, the Snapdragon 690 was selected for the job. It gets the same 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage as the LTE version, however the storage is now UFS, which will deliver faster reads and writes.

Interestingly, this model is supposed to launch with Android 11 out of the box while its 4G twin will start off with version 10. The screen, camera and battery are the same between the two.

All four of the new Sense phones will be available in the Fall.
