Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G goes official with Snapdragon 865+, two new colors

Samsung decided to tick one phone off its list for the August 5 Unpacked event and went ahead with the announcement of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G today.

We’ve known for weeks now that this was coming so there really are no surprises. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G inherits most of its hardware from the Galaxy Z Flip, but gets a new Snapdragon 865+ chipset with a 5G modem, and two new colors – Mystic Bronze and Mystic Grey.

The rest is mostly unchanged – the 5G model is 0.1mm thicker at the hinge and weighs the same 183g. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G has a 6.7-inch 2636x1080px folding Dynamic AMOLED screen inside and a 1.1-inch 300x112px Super AMOLED cover display on the outside.

There are two cameras on the outside – a 12MP regular snapper with f/1.8 aperture and a 12MP ultrawide with an f/2.2 aperture. Inside sits a 10MP f/2.4 selfie camera with autofocus.

The One UI 2.1 running on the Galaxy Z Flip 5G brings a few exclusive features to take advantage of the form factor, like Flex Mode, which splits some apps in two – like showing the camera viewfinder on the top half of the screen and the controls on the bottom.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5G will go on sale in Mystic Bronze and Mystic Grey on August 7. In the US it will be available through AT&T and T-Mobile priced $1,450 (that’s $70 more than the 4G model). Pre-orders in Germany begin today. T-Mobile has the Galaxy Z Flip 5G starting at €829 with a monthly plan, those who pre order before August 6 can get a limited gift box worth up to €300.

This leaves Samsung’s Unpacked event on August 5 focused on the Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Galaxy Buds Live and perhaps the Galaxy Tab S7 duo.
