PUBG Mobile and 117 more Chinese apps banned by Indian Government

After TikTok, WeChat and 57 other Chinese apps were banned by the Indian government in June, 118 more apps were added to the prohibited list today including hit battle royale game PUBG Mobile. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology released a press statement confirming the newly outlawed apps which were all described as being “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, security of state and public order”.

Notable other apps hit by the new ban include Alipay, Baidu, WeChat Work, PUBG MOBILE LITE, WeChat reading and Arena of Valor across both Android and iOS. There aren’t any specific details as to when the ban becomes effective though it’s expected to be enacted in the coming days. The official statement also clarified that all newly banned apps are accused of stealing and transmitting user data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs has reported multiple instances of violated user data from the newly banned apps. There’s also the case of the deteriorating India-China relations following border skirmishes near the Tibet region back in May.
