Here’s how ZTE Axon 20 5G’s under-display camera works

ZTE is going to launch the Axon 20 5G on September 1 as the first commercially available smartphone with an under-display selfie camera. The company went on Weibo and explained how the device will manage to take photos with no glare or fogging despite having the OLED stretch over the lens.

ZTE has implemented a special film with anti-reflective coating that maximizes the transparency of the screen without ruining the quality of the image.

The screen of the Axon 20 5G consists of seven layers – the protective glass, a polarizer, touch panel, an encapsulation glass, the OLED panel, and other elements needed for the smooth performance of any modern phone.

All the important layers have been coated with new material that is highly conductive, but in the meantime highly transmissive and transparent, suppressing any optical diffraction that would change colors or the depth of the image.

ZTE confirmed the biggest hurdle was how to reinvent the screen material, and on Tuesday we’ll see the phone become official. It is not yet known whether the device will escape China, but the manufacturer has been releasing its Axon devices across the globe in the past few years, so hopefully, the Axon 20 5G will also make it to the worldwide scene.

As an added bonus, we also got our first sample image from the phone’s selfie cam. Check it out:
